Monogamy in the 21st Century - The Ashley Madison Hack

Okay, I have to say that I lucked out.

Unlike many in my generation, I was exposed early and often to the internet, so I never believed that anything on the internet was "private."  Nothing you do on the internet is private.  Nothing.

So when the Ashley Madison site, catering to married folks who want to cheat on their spouses got hacked, it was also not much of a surprise.  It had to happen sometime, right?  Here's a decent post on the facts of the hack:
But it got me to thinking about the whole monogamy expectation.  Isn't it odd that for most of us, when we enter into a committed relationship --- with or without the marriage license --- and no matter what our religious affiliations, social class or culture --- loyalty counts.  And especially in committed relationships, that loyalty is measured by one --- the other person in the relationship. ARS Technica Article

And when that expectation turns out to be wrong, every one of us tends to get a little upset.  The important thing to do when that happens is not to head straight to the nearest divorce attorney, but for each partner to own up to his or her part in the infidelity --- and both partners really do have a part.  If adultery has happened to you, check out this Ted Talk video before you head for divorce court.
